Hi people, I have just brought a 2001 sporting with running problems, I believe the timing is a notch out and was just wondering if the timing is the same as on a mk1 1.2 16v engine. I.e. pistons at middle with cams locked?

Tony To remove the water pump of Fiat Punto/Stilo: 1 Disconnect the battery negative terminal. 2 Drain the cooling system. 3 Remove the timing belt. 4 Unscrew the retaining nut and the three bolts and withdraw the coolant pump (see illustration). The right cam gear is the intake side and the left side is the exhaust side. After removing the belt turn the exhaust cam down 1/2 notch. Timing mark on exhaust 1/2 notch down from the intake side. Open Question. I need to set timing the on my fiat palio 1.2 2001,unfortunately did not check the timing marks and now I cannot get it to start. Air – The air entering your car’s engine must be metered by thetake the rocker cover off, long big screw driver that'll fit down the spark plug hole, crank it over by hand until you think you are at TDC, then crank over the camshaft until cylinder 1's valves are both closed, try sticking the timing belt on then, if it doesn't start, crank the engine over by hand to 180 degrees (so no1 goes to tdc again!) and repeat rtCGO.
